FAQs

We want your candles to look and smell great for as long as possible. So you can get the best value from burning your candle we have some FAQ’s below to help. If you have a question that may not be cover below please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Is there a maximum time I should burn my candles for?
To ensure the container does not overheat we recommend a burn time of up to 4 hours. A container that overheats can cause the wax to heat faster and therefore may not last as long as the suggested burn time.

Do I need to trim the wick?
We recommend you trim a cotton wick to allow your candle to burn at the recommended burn time. Wicks that are not trimmed can form a mushroom, the black curling at the end of the wick. A mushroomed wick burns hotter than usual which will reduced the life of your candle as the wax will melt quicker. Additionally the wick can break away and fall into the melted wax.

Why do I have black soot coming from my wick?
Similar to the previous questions, a longer and mushroomed wick will generate black smoke/soot as it burns. To reduce to soot trim the wick before each use.

Why does my jar have black soot around the insides?
The black soot can be generated if the burn time exceeds about 4 hours or the wick requires trimming. The soot can be cleaned away with a damp cloth once the candle is cooled and the wax has solidified. A candle that is still hot or has molten wax should not be cleaned as the hot wax can burn your skin.

How long do I burn my candle when first lit?
When a candle is first lit it should burn until the wax has melted to the very edge so the entire top has liquefied, to a maximum of 4 hours. This is the same each time you light the candle. Burning a candle for short periods of time can cause it to tunnel. Candles create a memory as they burn and if they cannot burn to the edge each time the tunnel will continue throughout the remainder of the container.

My candle is tunnelling, can I save it?
To resolving any tunnelling issues the wax needs to be removed from the edges of the candle. The easiest way is to heat the wax first, this will make is easier to remove. Light the candle for about an hour so the top layer of wax starts to melt. This will also heat the container and soften the outer edges of the wax. Gently scrape the wax from the sides until the top of the candle is level. Either completely remove the wax or add to the melted wax in the centre. Be careful not to add too much unmelted wax to the centre or the wick maybe overcome and the candle will go out. If this happens pour the liquid wax out of the candle. We do not recommend this process over any drain or sink as the wax can solidify in the pipe and cause a blockage. Ensure the candle is allowed to burn long enough, up to 4 hours, to melt to the edge each time to prevent further tunnelling.

Can I clean out the container once the wax is all melted away?
You can clean out the containers with warm soapy water. Glass containers can be submerged in the water to aid in the removal of the wax. Concrete and Marble should not be submerged, wipe these out with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove the wax residue. The containers are not dishwasher safe and should only be hand washed.
